Introduction

The performing arts embody both the “exploration of humanity” and the “celebration of humanity.” They transcend the boundaries of region, race, era, and space, allowing stories to be shared among people throughout the world. Our goal is to provide an environment in which all may experience the performing arts freely and authentically. We are also committed to ensuring that the principle guiding our creative work is carried forward for future generations.

WHAT IS A “TACTILE MODEL”?

It’s a supportive tool, a scenic model for visually impaired audience members. It gives them a hands-on way to explore and understand the stage set design. It also makes your theatre performances more accessible and enjoyable to people with visual impairments.

The model features tactile details that can be felt by the fingers, giving a sense of the stage space and the set’s relative location, size, and shape. The tactile model is easy to use and can be placed in a designated area in the lobby or other accessible location before the performance. It is valuable for making theatre more inclusive and welcoming to people with visual impairments.

The Japan Association of Theatre Designers and Technicians has provided these models to many theatres in Japan. We proudly present the models in our talk session and are happy to share information on inclusive activities in your region.

About JATDT

The Japan Association of Theatre Designers & Technicians (JATDT) is the only professional association for theatrical designers in Japan. It brings together designers and technicians who participate in the visual and artistic aspects of the theatrical arts, as well as educators and researchers in the field.

The main objectives of the JATDT are to support the creative activities of its members and other theatrical artists throughout Japan and to help establish their social status. The organization also fosters further human resources in performing arts, preserves the professional skills of the members and non-members, and does many other activities.
